The wedding ceremony passed in a blur.

On the show, it would probably look like we went off stage got dressed and then came back to get hitched. In truth, the wedding happened two days later. Apparently, we’d surprised the producers with who would say yes and who would say no. Gowns needed to be fitted and sized. When the shoes they had bought me were too narrow, I offered to go barefoot. Instead, production was delayed by three hours while they flew—yes, they actually flew—a new pair of nude heels from the mainland.

The night before our wedding, Kye and I felt like we were the only people alive. Romantic candlelight dinner out on the beach while Kenzie and Benjamin dined in the restaurant.

“Why out here?” I asked. The wind kept whipping my hair and I was sure our meal would have as much sand as salt.

“You like the water.”

“Is that why we went on the boat?”

“Yeah.”

“I thought you would have picked the helicopter.”

“Elena,” he sighed. “I know you’ve got me pegged as being an asshole, but even I’m not that big a douchbag.”

We sat in silence, and I felt guilty for agreeing to marry a man without trusting him to be a decent human being. I needed to stop being close minded. If this experience had changed me, I had to trust that it had also changed Kye.

We’d made each other better people, I hoped.

“I’ve got a gift for you.”

“Really?” I half squealed.

“Look, I spoke to Bree after you said yes, and I got them to get this for you.”

He handed me a box.

“I don’t know how else to show you this is serious for me. When my grandfather died, he left me the engagement ring. He’d kept it on his pinky finger every day after my grandmother died. I never thought I’d be giving it to anyone. I never thought I’d be getting married.”

He held my hand, placing the box in the palm and carefully wrapping my fingers around the edge.

“Elena Mercer. Will you wear the ring my grandmother wore most of her life? Tomorrow, when we face each other, will you marry me? Will you wear my grandmother’s ring for the rest of your life? Will you be my wife?”

On the quiet of the beach with seemingly only the wind and surf around us, I said the same words that I would utter less than twenty-four hours later, “Kye Branson, I do.”
